CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Limestone Saints came away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Queens Royals to win the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Championship final this afternoon at Bessant Field. With the win, the Saints claim their second conference title in the last two years.
Despite outshooting the Saints, 11-7, today, the Royals found themselves unlucky when it came to putting the ball in the back of the cage. Both teams finished play with four shots on goal apiece as Kelly Diplock led the Saints with three and Hanna Nechay led Queens with two. Additionally, the Royals earned nine penalty corners to Limestone's three.
With the score sitting tied at 0-0 coming out of the halftime break, Limestone's Alyssa Stubbs scored today's game-winner off of a rebounded save in the 33rd minute of play. Queens' Nechay immediately responded putting a shot on goal in the 35th, but it would be turned away by Limestone' Daisy Ruhle.
In goal, Avian Thompson completed the game with three saves while Ruhle of the Saints totaled four.
Limestone's Diplock was named MVP of the tournament after scoring a goal with five shots on goal during the tournament.
