Trojans Wrap up Season with Win over Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Anderson baseball team book-ended its 2021 season with wins over Southern Wesleyan after the Trojans knocked off the Warriors, 7-2, Tuesday night at Dr. C. Keith Connor Field.

Anderson snapped a six-game skid and finished the season with a 13-24 mark, while Southern Wesleyan saw its win streak halted at two and fell to 9-27 on the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Sophomore Justin Fox was 2-for-4 on the night, with a pair of singles and two RBI. Senior catcher Tyler Berry was 2-for-4, with a pair of doubles and also reached on a ninth-inning walk. Senior Chandler Castleberry added a double, a single and a walk, while designated hitter Davis Goodyear posted a pair of singles.

Senior Christian Carpenter – the second of eight Trojan hurlers – improved to 4-2 on the year after tossing four innings in relief. He allowed one run on seven hits, while striking out six Warriors and walking one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Cody Adams got things rolling by leading off the game with his seventh double of the season, while Goodyear and Vella followed with back-to-back singles. Castleberry reached base on a walk and following consecutive sacrifice fly balls by Fox and Will Lindsey, the Trojans led 3-0.

AU took advantage of back-to-back singles by Castleberry and Fox to lead off the third inning and built its lead to 5-0. The duo posted a one-out double and a single to increase the Trojans' lead to 6-0 in the fifth, with Southern Wesleyan getting on the scoreboard with a solo run in the bottom of the fifth. The Trojans got that run back in the top of the sixth when Berry led off with a double and scored two batters later on an error by the Warriors.

Southern Wesleyan rounded out the scoring with another solo run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Trojans recorded four doubles on the night – their fourth-highest total of the season.

NOTABLES
Tyler Berry closed the season on a seven-game hitting streak and reached base safely in his last 11 games.
• Anderson holds a 38-19 advantage in the overall series that began in 1998. The Trojans have won six straight and eight of the last 10 matchups in the series.
Cody Adams closed the season on a four-game hitting streak.
Justin Fox and Nick Vella each recorded eight multi-hit games on the season.
