Tennis sweeps Emory & Henry in SAC opener

Meadowview, Va. —- The Catawba College men's and women's tennis teams began South Atlantic Conference play 1-0 on Tuesday, as the women defeated the Wasps 6-1 and the men won their match 5-2. The women improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the SAC, while the men earn their first win of the season at 1-1 and 1-0 in league action.

The women earned the doubles point by taking all three matches – Alexandra Parra and Vicky Beardsley won 6-1, Carolina Correia and Sofia Hernandez took their match 6-3 and Tina Gomes and Nika Dundovic won 6-4. 

The ladies had similar success in the single matches, taking five of six. Miya Ami won 6-3, 6-1, Parra took her singles match 8-1, Matilde Moretti won 6-4, 6-2, Correia won 8-5 and Veronika Poliakova took the final singles' match 6-1, 6-1.

On the men's side, they lost the doubles point, as Paul Dekester and Sebastian Zabala were the only team able to take their doubles match, 6-0.

The men also won five of six singles, including Marcos Castares, Tyler Juergens, Dekester, Zabala and Taketoshi Nanao.

The team returns home on Wednesday, hosting Limestone in their SAC home opener.
