Women's Basketball Wins 54-42 Defensive Battle at LMU

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Catawba earned a 54-42 win over host Lincoln Memorial in a defensive battle on Saturday afternoon at Turner Arena. The Catawba women rebound from Wednesday's loss to improve to 16-4 overall and 9-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lady Railsplitters fall to 13-7 and 6-5.

Lyrik Thorne led Catawba with 17 points and six rebounds. Sara McIntosh added 15 points with Janiya Downs going for 10 points and grabbing eight boards. Saquita Joyner paced LMU with 12 points and nine rebounds. Lauren Flowers also reached double figures with 11.

Neither team shot well, Catawba at just 36%, but the Lady Indians held Lincoln Memorial to 29%. LMU made just 6-of-26 (23%) in the final half as Catawba pulled out from a 29-25 edge at the break. Catawba also enjoyed a 13-5 edge in second-chance points and a 17-11 margin in scoring off turnovers. The Lady Indians out-rebounded LMU 40-36 and committed one less turnover.

LMU scored the first basket then Catawba ran off 14 in a row. The Lady Railsplitters rallied near the half, taking their final lead at 23-22 at the 3:12 mark. Thorne converted a three-point play with 3:06 remaining and Catawba led the rest of the way.

Catawba restored a double-digit lead with the opening six points of the second half and held a 43-33 edge entering the final 10 minutes. LMU made just one basket over the first six minutes of the fourth quarter and the Lady Indians pushed the lead to as many as 16.

Catawba heads out of conference on Wednesday, traveling to Elizabeth City State for a 6 p.m. tip with the Vikings.
