Lions fall in final game of series versus St. Leo
The Mars Hill baseball team (1-3) was defeated by St. Leo (3-1) by a score of 6-5 in final game of their four-game series Sunday afternoon.
ST. LEO, Fla. - The Mars Hill baseball team (1-3) was defeated by St. Leo (3-1) by a score of 6-5 in final game of their four-game series Sunday afternoon.
For the second time over the weekend, a walkoff by St. Leo gave the Lions their third win of the season. Bobby Sparling, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, hit a walkoff home rum to win the series.
Both teams traded runs in the second inning as Paul Martin opened the scoring with a RBI single that scored Ruben Trillo. Yazael Nunuez RBI single in the bottom half of the frame tied the game at one.
Mars Hill put up four runs in the top of the third, highlighted by Zach Weaver's three-run home run to put the Lions up 5-1.
St. Leo would go on to score five unanswered runs from the sixth inning on to come from behind. Adrien Roa's RBI single was the catalyst. Nunez, later in the sixth, was walked with the bases loaded, scoring Paul Coumoulos to cut the lead down to two.
Nunez, in the bottom of the eighth, tied the game with a two-run double, picking up his fourth RBI of the day.
Roa and Nunez led St. Leo with two hits apiece while Martin led the Lions with two. Nunez led all players with four RBI while Weaver led Mars Hill with three.
Jestin Jones earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out four. Tristan Camp was credited with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
Mars Hill opens their home slate of 2022 on Wednesday, February 9 when they host Belmont Abbey. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m at Henderson Field.
