Tennis kicks off Spring Break trip with split at PBA

West Palm Beach, FL —- The Catawba College men's and women's tennis teams took on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in their first set of March matches. The Catawba Women won 6-1, while the Catawba Men fell in a back-and-forth 4-3 match.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Ami Miya and Rin Igarashi claimed the first match of the day 6-1

Sofia Hernandez Mera and Veronika Poliakova bested the Sailfish 6-2

-Tina Gomes and Nika Dundovic came up clutch in a 6-4 victory to help the Catawba Women sweep doubles. 

-Miya contributed yet another 6-0 win in her single showdown due to retirement in Singles 1. In Singles 2, Matilde Moretti got the job done in straight sets 6-4 and 6-3. Isidora Zivkovic fell in her first set 6-2 but would claim the next two 7-5 and 10-6 for the win in Singles 3. 

-Vaishnavi Venkatesh won a hard-fought first set 7-6 before the shutout set two victory 6-0 in Singles 4. Veronika Poliakova battled hard but fell in Singles 5, 7-6 and 6-3. Sofia Hernandez would close out an outstanding day for the Catawba Women's team in a thrilling three-set victory. She claimed the first set 6-4 and the third 10-6 to give Catawba the 6-1 match win. 

 

- On the men's side, Edoardo Cecere and Ryan Little got Catawba off to a strong start with the 6-3 win, while Tyler Juergens and Paul Dekester followed with a 6-4 victory of their own; Taketoshi Nanao and Sebastian Zabala fell in a close 6-4 showdown vs the Sailfish. 

- Cecere would fall in Singles 1, suffering defeat in the second and third sets. Juergens would get Catawba their first singles win in Singles 2, claiming the first set 6-4 and the third set 10-5. Little took the first set in Singles 3 but could not maintain the early momentum and would drop the final two sets. 

-Marko Sudar railed after losing set one to take set two, 6-3, but would fall in the third in Singles 4. Nano would fall in straight sets in Singles 5, while Zabala would conclude the day for Catawba with 6-4 wins in both sets to take Singles 5. However, his efforts would not be enough, with Catawba suffering a narrow 4-3 match defeat.
