Softball picks up 10th SAC win in split vs Newberry

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team earned its 10th win in South Atlantic Conference play this season on Thursday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Newberry. The Catawba Indians move to 22-14 overall and 10-8 in the SAC, while the Wolves move to 24-14 and 11-7 in league action.

Catawba picked up the run-rule win in game one. Riley Tucker went 3-for-3 with two homers and five RBI, while Courtnee Carter picked up a pair of hits and a run scored.

The Catawba Indians scratched across five runs in the bottom of the first, as Carter and Christina Brendle got aboard before Tucker blasted a homer to center field to put Catawba up 3-0 before recording an out. Savanna Balderston added to the lead with a two-RBI single to bat around before the end of the first inning.

Tucker homered for the second time in the contest in the fourth inning, as Catawba wrapped up game one in five innings with an 8-0 win. Alex Baquie picked up her 16th win in the circle this season, allowing just one hit in five shutout innings.

The Wolves used an eight-run fourth inning to earn a 10-0 run-rule win in game two, as Catawba was only able to muster two hits in five innings.

Savanna Beaver got the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Catawba returns home next week, hosting No. 16 Wingate on Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
