Men's Soccer Edged By #12 Limestone

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Limestone equalized late in regulation then scored a winner in overtime to edge host Catawba 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday at the Frock Soccer Complex. The 12th-ranked Saints improve to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 6-3-2 and 2-3-1.

Catawba got an early goal in the 13th minute to go on top. Nico Monreal sent a long ball after receiving a kick from goalie Gianluca Tommasi that got over Saint keeper Johann Hipper and was tapped in at the back post by Simone Trentin.

The Indians held that one goal lead until late in the match, even stopping a 23rd-minute penalty try by Limestone. The Saints broke through in the 84th minute. Jacob Hancock got on the back of a cross to notch the tying goal.

In overtime, Catawba nearly got a winner from Nate Burns, but after the save Limestone counter. The Saints earned a corner in the final minute of the initial overtime period and Angelo Fabricio headed home a corner from Sjur Drechsler.

Hipper made four saves for Limestone, who out-shot Catawba 21-9. Tommasi recorded three saves in the opening half for Catawba. Zak Stiffler played the final 54 minutes and posted four saves.

Catawba travels to Queens on Wednesday for a match at 7:30 p.m.
