Women’s Lacrosse drops Saturday contest vs Lander

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest to Lander University 20-11 at Shuford Stadium on Saturday. The Bearcats improve to 4-2 overall, while the Catawba Indians drop to 1-4 on the season.

Mary Sorvillo led the way offensively for Catawba with a career-best four goals on just four shots while adding three ground balls. Ella McCusker added a pair of scores for Catawba, while Joey Baillie had three ground balls, three draw controls and four caused turnovers and Erin Young chipped in four draw controls and four caused turnovers. Alyssa Suchan led Lander with five goals and five assists.

Lander scored the game's first six goals on the afternoon, as Suchan's score put the Bearcats up 6-0 at the 5:23 mark. Sorvillo added two goals and Madison Shaffer scored for the first time this season in the final five minutes of the first quarter, but Lander still led 8-3.

Catawba put up five goals in the second quarter alone, but allowed seven as Lander increased its lead by the halftime break to 15-8.

The Catawba Indians matched goal for goal in the third quarter, as Caroline Cox found the back of the net and Sorvillo scored again from the free-position to trail 17-10 with 15 minutes remaining. Sorvillo scored again for Catawba to start the fourth, but Lander scored the game's final three goals to ice the game away.

Catawba hits the road this week, traveling to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. start.
