#6 Newberry takes postponed pair over Baseball on Monday

Newberry, S.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader Monday at 6th-ranked Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Wolves improve to 31-6 overall and 15-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians drop to 23-17 overall and 12-5 in league action.

The Wolves pitching held the Catawba bats in check throughout all 16 innings on Monday, keeping the visitors to one run on eight hits. 

Newberry scored on a wild pitch in the first inning in game one, but neither team scratched across a run until the fifth inning, when the Wolves cashed in for three runs in the fifth before scoring three more in the sixth. 

Bennett Roemer picked up the win for Newberry, improving to 7-0 on the season, while allowing just three singles in seven shutout innings. Gunnar Erickson closed the deal with a shutout two innings. Austin Fine suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on four hits in 4.2 innings of work.

The Wolves picked up where they left off in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first before taking another 7-0 lead after four innings. Dylan Driver scored an error in the sixth, but Newberry held the Catawba bats scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the win in the nightcap.

Tyler Chinpire picked up the win for Newberry, tossing five shutout innings, while Casey Gouge got the loss for Catawba, giving up three runs on four hits in one inning of work.

Catawba continues action against top-10 opponents this week, traveling to #1 North Greenville on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start.
