Shuren scores three in collegiate debut in Women’s Lacrosse’s season opener

Tigerville, S.C. —- The Catawba College women's lacrosse team opened their 2024 season on Monday night, falling at North Greenville 13-7, as freshman attack Abby Shuren scored three goals in her collegiate debut.

 

TEAM STATS

- North Greenville out-shot Catawba 27-21

- The Crusaders put 18 shots on goal to the Catawba Indians' 13

- NGU led the ground battle 20-14

- Catawba recorded 14 draw controls to North Greenville's nine

- The Crusaders committed 16 turnovers to the Catawba Indians' 28

- NGU was 19-for-22 on clear attempts; Catawba was 15-of-23

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Shuren scored three goals in her collegiate debut on four shots

- Joey Baillie added two goals, an assist, five draw controls and two ground balls

- Helena Cronemiller chipped in a goal, an assist and two ground balls

- Meredith Marchetti also scored in her collegiate debut

- McKenzie Mullan had team-highs of five draw controls and two caused turnovers

- Evie Kauserud made eight saves in goal

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- Baillie struck for the first two goals of the game, as the Catawba Indians led 2-0 after five minutes

- NGU got on the board with less than five minutes to go in the quarter

- Cronemiller responded with a score to restore the two-goal lead

- Isabella Ortiz found the back of the net with 36 seconds left, as Catawba took a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter

 

SECOND QUARTER

- North Greenville tied the game in the opening minute of the second quarter

- Shuren answered right back with her first collegiate goal at the 12:35 mark

- The Crusaders scored the final four goals of the first half to lead 7-4 at the break

 

THIRD QUARTER

- NGU added three more goals to extend their run to seven unanswered to take a 10-4 lead

- Baillie found Shuren to stop the run just under the 5-minute mark

- North Greenville scored back-to-back goals to lead 12-5 after three quarters

 

FOURTH QUARTER

- Shuren scored for the third time at the 14:36 mark

- After the Crusaders added an insurance score, Marchetti found the back of the net in her first collegiate game
