Mars Hill defeated by No. 21 Catawba
The Mars Hill women's basketball team (7-16, 3-12 SAC) was defeated by No. 21 Catawba (21-4, 13-2 SAC) by a score of 66-36 Wednesday evening.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (7-16, 3-12 SAC) was defeated by No. 21 Catawba (21-4, 13-2 SAC) by a score of 66-36 Wednesday evening.
The Indians led 16-12 after the opening 10 minutes as Janiya Downs led all players with seven points. Maddie Gillie paced the Lions' offense with five as Mars Hill converted 40 percent of their shots in the frame.
Mars Hill cut the deficit to two entering the half, outscoring Catawba 13-11 with Janette Hanni's five points leading all players. Naja Ngongba pulled down four of the team's seven rebounds in the second quarter.
Catawba turned the tides in the third, outscoring Mars Hill 24-6, converting on nearly 48 percent of their shots. The balanced scoring attack was led by Sara McIntosh, Lyrik Thorne, and Janiya Foskey as they each netted four points. Ana Baptista scored four of the Lions' six in the third.
The Indians rolled their momentum over into the fourth, outscoring Mars Hill 15-5 as Mary Spry led all players with seven points.
Thorne led the Indians with 11 points followed by nine apiece from Spry and Downs. McIntosh led Catawba with six rebounds.
Hanni led Mars Hill with 11 points and added four rebounds. Gillie ended the contest with nine points while Ngongba led all players with 10 rebounds.
Mars Hill wraps up their road slate of contests on Saturday, February 18 when they face Coker. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m
