Mars Hill falls to Newberry in penultimate game

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (3-9, 1-8 SAC) was defeated by No. 20 Newberry (6-5, 5-4 SAC) by a score of 21-8 Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves opened on a 4-0 run with four different goal scorers. Devin Napol ended the scoring streak with 9:10 left in the first quarter. Jackson Courson scored the Lions' second goal of the frame.
Mars Hill entered the second down 7-2. After trading goals to open the stanza, The Wolves netted three straight to build their lead to 11-3. Brandon Beland collected two points in the final 5:28 of the half, recording a goal and an assist.
Newberry outscored the Lions 10-3 in the second half, including five unanswered in the final quarter.
Zachary Sunderland led all players with six points (1g, 5a) followed by Baker Westmoreland (5g) and Kyle Dunklee's (3g, 2a) five points.
Beland led the Lions with four points (2g, 2a) while Zac Carrigan netted two goals and one assist for three points on the day.
Prior to the game, seniors Brandon Beland, Corbett Kolb, and Jayson Moorman were recognized for their contributions to the program.
The Lions wrap up the season on Saturday, April 17 when they face Lenoir-Rhyne on the road. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
