Baseball's Late Comeback Falls Short
The Lions’ baseball team lost to Newberry 12-10 Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' baseball team lost to Newberry 12-10 Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill fell to 5-12-1 overall and 2-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Wolves improved to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in the SAC.
Travis Owens went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a RBI to lead the Lions offensively. Christian Stampler and Josh Hall recorded two RBI and one hit each in the contest. Alec Bivins took the loss (0-2) for the Lions on the mound.
Colin Allman went 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double and three RBI to pace the Wolves at the plate. Harrison Kinard went 3-for-5 with a homerun and three RBI. Dylan Southerland threw five innings allowing four runs while striking out five batters to pick up the win (3-1) on the mound for Newberry. Shannon Smith recorded his first save on the year throwing the final inning facing the minimum three batters and struck out one.
The Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead after their first at-bat on five hits highlighted by a two-run homerun by Kinard. After the team traded runs in the third inning, Newberry scored five runs in the fourth inning on four hits and one Lion error to enjoy a 10-1 advantage. Derek Olenchuk hit a two-run homerun in the at-bat. The Wolves ended their scoring in the fifth frame after Allman hit a two-run homerun to left field and extend Newberry's lead to 12-1.
Mars Hill then scored nine unanswered runs but unfortunately fell short in the end. The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on two hits and then added a pair of runs in the seventh inning after Hall doubled down the right field line to drive in Stampler and Austin Treadway. The Lions then scored four runs in the eighth inning but could not push across any more runs in the ninth inning due to a solid pitching outing by Newberry's Smith.
Mars Hill will host King on Tuesday, March 6. The first pitch at Henderson Field is set for 2 p.m.
