Women’s Lacrosse wraps up season at UVA Wise

Wise, Va. —- The Catawba College women's lacrosse team completed their 2023 season on Saturday, falling at UVA Wise 14-7 in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action. The Cavaliers improve to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians end their season at 3-14 overall and 1-9 in league action.

Joey Baillie led the team with three goals and an assist, adding five draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Ella McCusker added a goal and an assist. Senior Erin Young added a team-high four caused turnovers. Five Cavaliers tied with two goals scored.

UVA Wise opened the game's scoring at the 9:30 mark, but Baillie responded back with a score three minutes later. The Cavs added another goal just before the end of the period, leading 2-1 after 15 minutes.

Wise struck for the opening three goals of the second period, extending their lead to 5-1. Mary Sorvillo and Baillie scored back-to-back goals to cut their deficit in half, but the Cavaliers scored three straight goals to end the half, taking an 8-3 lead into the halftime break.

UVA Wise went on to score the first four goals of the second half, taking a 12-3 lead at the 3:35 mark of the third period. Helena Cronemiller and Baillie scored two goals to end the period trailing 12-5.


McCsuker and Caroline Cox scored two straight goals after a Cavs scored opened the final 15 minutes to cut the deficit to 13-7 with three and a half minutes to go, but the Cavaliers added a late score to cap the 14-7 victory.
