Women's Basketball Puts In Dominating Performance Against Newberry

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba cruised to an 82-45 win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The win moves the Catawba Indians to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the SAC. The Wolves drop to 5-10 and 1-4.

Janiya Downs posted 21 points and 10 rebounds in the victory for Catawba. Lyrik Thorne added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. Janiya Foskey came off the bench to net 10 points, while Lauren Ford grabbed 11 rebounds.

Catawba closed the first quarter on a 13-5 run to lead 19-10 and kept that run up through the second quarter. The Lady Indians scored the first 10 points of the second quarter and kept Newberry from scoring until the 5:34 mark. Catawba went on to lead 39-20 at the break then out-scored Newberry 24-8 in the third quarter.

Catawba shot just 38%, but hammered Newberry on the glass, out-rebounding the Wolves 61-32. Newberry shot just 24% and made only five field goals in the first half.

Tyla Stolberg was the lone Newberry player in double figures, coming off the bench to scored 15 points. She added seven rebounds. Holly Davies had nine points and five boards.

Catawba travels to UVA Wise on Saturday for a scheduled 2 p.m. tip.
