Mars Hill opens weekend series with Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (5-18, 2-5 SAC) was defeated by Newberry (16-4, 3-1 SAC) by a score of 22-9 Friday night.
The Wolves plated seven runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by Rhett Jolly's two-run double to left center field. In the top of the second, Alex Naran put the Lions on the board with a solo home run down the left field line.
After allowing two runs in both the second and third, the Lions trailed 11-1 entering the top of the fourth. Trevor Bailey plated the second Mars Hill run of the contest with a RBI single to right field.
A RBI double from the Wolves put them up by 10 entering the top of the seventh. Mars Hill plated two runs in the top of the seventh from a Jordan Lathe RBI groundout and a Zach Weaver sacrifice fly.
Newberry responded by scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Chandler Mims' two-run single.
The Lions battled in the top of the night, scoring five. Weaver's RBI single was the catalyst for the streak. Chris Bleeker doubled to right center field, scoring two and later in the frame, a Newberry error allowed Weaver to score. Tyler Sellers' sacrifice fly that scored Bleeker was the Lions' final run of the contest.
Braylin Marine led all players with five hits and five RBI while scoring four runs. Chapel Matson led the Lions with two hits while the trio of Weaver, Bleeker, and Naran recorded two RBI apiece.
Joe Lafiora earned the win, throwing six innings and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five.
The teams continue their series on Saturday, March 11 with game one of the doubleheader set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
