Catawba sweeps Emory & Henry Sunday

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team earned two quality wins over Emory & Henry on Sunday, handing the Wasps their first sweep in South Atlantic Conference action this season. The Catawba Indians improve to 19-13 overall and 7-7 in the SAC, while E&H drops to 16-15 overall and 11-7 in league play.

The offense exploded for 11 runs in game number one as Bri Gallagher went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Kary Hales also had three hits including a homer. Riley Tucker added two hits including a double with two RBI and two runs scored.

Hales' homer in the second inning gave Catawba the early lead before Tucker's 2-RBI double in the third inning extended the Catawba Indians' lead to 3-0 after three frames. Balderston drove in a run on a groundout in the fourth all before E&H scored a run, leading 4-0 after four.

Rachel Hill's three-run home run cut the Wasps' deficit to a single run in the fifth inning, but Catawba responded with five runs in the bottom half including an RBI single from Gallagher and a 2-RBI triple from Molly Strider. Gallagher added two more RBI in the sixth on a double to reach the mercy rule.

Alex Baquie got the win, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out six in six innings.

Catawba jumped on E&H in the second inning in game number two, scoring four runs in the frame to take the early lead. Courtnee Carter drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Christina Brendle hit an RBI single up the middle. The two then scored on a throwing error from Emory & Henry to double their lead.

Ashlyn Rachon homered for the Wasps in the top of the sixth, but Tucker got the run back in the bottom half on an RBI single. 

Tucker got the win in the circle, allowing one run on eight hits and striking out four in 5.1 innings of work. Baquie came in for her first save of the season, recording the last five outs without giving up a hit.

Catawba returns to the road next Tuesday, facing Limestone for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
