Driver’s big day leads Baseball to big win over Shippensburg
Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team utilized a big day at the plate from sophomore outfielder Dylan Driver to plate 19 runs in a 19-10 win over Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-0, while the Raiders drop to 0-2.
Driver went 3-for-5 with five RBI and five runs scored. Logan Rogers and Cameron Mills combined to go 5-for-11 with six RBI and five more runs scored. Cole Hales and Jackson Price were the others with multiple runs driven; Catawba piled up 17 RBI on the afternoon. Morgan Wyatt had a double, a homer and four RBI for the Raiders.
Brandon Rodgers earned the win for Catawba tossing five innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts before surrendering four earned runs in the sixth. After Shippensburg started to mount a comeback, freshman Casey Gouge shut the door with 2.1 shutout innings on the mound.
The Catawba Indians took as much of a 14-1 lead after five innings before the Raiders scored eight unanswered runs to cut it to a five-run deficit. After the seventh inning stretch, Catawba plated five more runs to shut the comeback down.
Catawba looks to complete the sweep on Sunday, hosting Shippensburg for a noon first pitch.
