Wingate takes doubleheader to win series vs Baseball

Wingate, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader at Wingate on Saturday, as the Bulldogs took the series win in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Bulldogs improve to 20-11 and 10-5 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians drop to 19-13 and 9-3 in league action.

Levi Perrell went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Harris Jackson added a pair of hits for Catawba. Brett Adams led Wingate, going 3-for-3 with a double, a grand slam and five RBI.

Wingate's Ricky Clark gave the Bulldogs the early lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to left field. Wingate added two more runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead midway through game one. The Bulldogs added four more runs in seventh off Adams' grand slam to cap the scoring on the day for Wingate.

Logan Rogers drove home Perrell on a single to left field to plate Catawba's lone run of the day in the top of the ninth.

Austin Mitchell earned the win for WU, tossing eight shutout innings while striking out nine. Brandon Rodgers got the loss for Catawba, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks in two innings of work.

Wingate jumped on Catawba for six runs before recording an out in the third inning of game two, while Catawba was unable to score any runs in the rubber match of the series. 

Sam Brodersen got the win for the Bulldogs, pitching six scoreless innings and striking out eight. Mason Gwyn suffered his first loss of the season, allowing six runs on five hits in two innings pitched.

Catawba claims Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis as its home on Tuesday, facing Belmont Abbey for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
