Lions felled by No. 1 NGU
The Mars Hill baseball team (3-14) was defeated by No. 1 North Greenville (14-1) by a score of 21-7 Tuesday afternoon on the road.
TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (3-14) was defeated by No. 1 North Greenville (14-1) by a score of 21-7 Tuesday afternoon on the road.
Mars Hill led 2-1 after one, highlighted by Silas Isenhour's RBI groundout. Pat Monteith's solo home run in the bottom of the first was the catalyst for an 11-0 run over the next three innings. The Crusaders plated six in the second highlighted by Marek Chlup's two-run single and in the third, Jax Cash capped the run with a two-run home run to left, leading 11-2 after three innings of play.
After a scoreless fourth, Mars Hill scored three off of a RBI triple from Jordan Lathe and a RBI double from Chapel Matson. Later in the inning, off of a North Greenville wild pitch, Matson crossed home.
North Greenville responded by adding five runs in the fifth with Bryce Roddey's two-run double down the left field line highlighting the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Matson scored his second run of the game, once again off of a Crusaders' wild pitch. Zach Weaver later scored off of Alex Naran's groundout, cutting the deficit to nine entering the bottom part of the frame.
A pair of two-run home runs from Zach Cowart and Kaleb Hall in the bottom of the seventh extended the lead back to 13 and the scoring was capped off in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Darrien Whitaker.
Both Cash and Roddey went 3-for-4 from the plate with Cash leading all players with three RBI. Lathe and Weaver led the Lions with two hits while Lathe and Matson scored two runs apiece.
Carter Dierdorf was credited with the win, allowing one hit in two innings.
Mars Hill returns to South Atlantic Conference play when they face Carson-Newman on the road. First pitch on Friday, March 3 is set for 2 p.m.
