Lions fall to Erskine in non-conference play
The Mars Hill baseball team (1-8) was defeated by Erskine (7-2) by a score of 9-5 Wednesday afternoon.
DUE WEST, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (1-8) was defeated by Erskine (7-2) by a score of 9-5 Wednesday afternoon.
Erskine, trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the second, scored five runs to take their lone lead of the contest. Dale Francis, Jr. and Juan Jaime recorded back-to-back solo home runs to open the scoring. Daniel Hernandez's RBI knotted the game at three and later in the frame, a bases loaded walk drawn by Ashby Smith put the Flying Fleet up by two.
After a scoreless third inning, the Flying Fleet put up four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extended their lead to 9-3. The scoring stretch was highlighted by Tariq Bacon's RBI double.
The Lions plated two in the top of the sixth as Luke Hayes scored off of a bases loaded walk drawn by Trey Putnam. Jordan Lathe's RBI groundout scored Tyler Sellers for the Lions' fifth run of the contest.
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the top of the second as Hayes scored off of a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Lathe plated two off of a single to left field to put the Lions up 3-0.
Jaime, Bacon, and Rolando Lujo each recorded two hits for Erskine while Jaime led the team with two RBI. Lathe led all players with three RBI and adding two hits. Alex Naran also recorded two hits for the Lions.
Jordan Whitaker allowed five runs on five hits in 1.1 innings pitched in the loss. Daniel Vos allowed three runs on six hits in five innings for the win.
Mars Hill opens South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, February 17 when they take on Catawba. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
