Men’s Soccer grinds out 1-0 win over Mount Olive

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's soccer team picked up a non-conference win on a soggy Frock Field on Tuesday night, as Joe Bennett scored the winner in the 78th minute to prevail 1-0 over Mount Olive.

 

TEAM STATS

- Each team took 19 shots

- Mount Olive put 10 shots on goal to Catawba's six

- The Catawba Indians had eight corner kicks to UMO's six

- The Trojans had three of four yellow cards in the match

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Bennett scored the game-winner in the 78th minute

- Zak Stiffler made nine saves in goal to earn his second clean sheet of the season

- Juan Pablo Nicoletti dished out the assist on the game-winner

- Vito Venaria, Kheynne Ona-Vera, Sebastia Cerda-Tous and Noah Sapsford got a shot on goal

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

- Stiffler made his first of nine saves on the night in the sixth minute and again in the 12th

- The Trojans got a penalty kick in the 35th minute, but the attempt was wide

- Stiffler ended the half with two more saves, as the teams entered the half tied 0-0

 

SECOND HALF

- The two goalies combined for two more saves in the span of a minute early in the second half

- Stiffler added two more saves in the 55th and 59th minutes, and then two more in the 71st and 74th minutes

- Bennett broke through with the winner in the 78th minute

- Catawba had three shots on goal the rest of the way without letting the Trojans get a shot on

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba takes the weekend off before returning to South Atlantic Conference play next Wednesday, traveling to Wingate for a 5 p.m. start
