Baseball storms back to force split at Limestone

Gaffney, S.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team outscored Limestone 7-0 in the final three innings of game two on Saturday, forcing a split against the Saints in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Catawba Indians move to 27-21 overall and 16-7 in the SAC, while the Saints move to 19-28 on the season and 11-13 in conference play.

Eight different players tallied one base hit in Catawba's 13-5 loss in the opener of the doubleheader, as Limestone utilized an eight-run fifth inning to pull away from Catawba in game one.

Brandon Rodgers took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks in two innings pitched.

Limestone jumped ahead early in game number two as well, scoring nine runs in the first inning of the seven-inning rubber match of the series to take a 9-2 lead after Cole Hales and Carson Yates recorded RBI base hits in the top half of the inning.

Catawba chipped away with two more runs in the second inning, as Hales doubled to right center to score two more runs. Levi Perrell's solo homer to center field cut the lead further, as Catawba trailed 9-5 through the middle of the fourth.

Davis Turner answered with a solo homerun in the bottom half of the fourth, as the Saints took a 10-5 lead with just three innings to go. 

Perrell started the comeback off with a 2-RBI double in the fifth while Dylan Driver followed with an RBI single to left field. Cameron Mills recorded an RBI groundout in the sixth to cut the deficit to one heading into the seventh, where Hales tied the game with an RBI single up the middle, Drew Robertson drove in the go-ahead run and Mills added insurance with another RBI single.

Robbie Cowie earned the win on the mound, allowing one earned run on two hits in five innings, striking out five. The grad student lowered his ERA to 2.43 on the season in the performance.

Catawba wraps up its regular season play on Monday, hosting top-ranked North Greenville for a 6 p.m. start before heading to SAC Tournament play at either Newberry or Wingate.
