Baseball closes opening weekend in Florida with loss at Barry
Miami Shores, Fla. —- The Catawba College baseball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, closing out their three-game roadtrip in Florida with a 6-3 defeat at Barry University.
TEAM STATS
- Barry out-hit Catawba 7-6
- The Buccaneers had three of four extra-base hits in the game – all doubles
- BU committed three of four errors on the afternoon
- The Bucs left just three runners on base; the Catawba Indians stranded 10
- Catawba had five stolen bases in the contest to Barry's two
- Barry's pitchers allowed one earned run on six hits, striking out three and walking four; the Catawba Indian staff allowed five earned runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking one
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Sam Hunter went 2-for-4 with a walk, a steal and a run driven in
- Levi Perrell doubled, walked and scored
- Dylan Driver drove him in, walked, stole two bases and scored
- Jackson Price also recorded a two-hit game
- Hayden Simmerson made his collegiate debut on the mound, allowing three earned runs in five innings pitched, striking out four and walking one in the losing decision
- Brandon Rodgers recorded eight outs, allowing two runs on two hits before Griffyn Shelton entered to make the final out
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST INNING
- Perrell doubled to right-center in the opening at-bat of the game
- After he advanced on a wild pitch, Perrell scored on a sacrifice fly from Driver
THIRD INNING
- A Freddy Rodriguez double gave Barry runners on second and third with one out, as Simmerson faced his first trouble of the game
- Nick Towms doubled down the left field line to score both runs before he scored himself later in the inning on a sac fly
- Barry made it four runs in the inning on a wild pitch
FIFTH INNING
- Drew Robertson singled and stole second to start the fifth inning
- A groundout moved Robertson up to third; he scored on a throw ing error
- Driver stole another base, allowing Hunter's single to score him to cut the deficit to 4-3
EIGHTH INNING
- Barry added two more runs in the eighth on a sacrifice bunt and a Kevin Noriega single to take a 6-3 lead
NINTH INNING
- Catawba brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Catawba Indians grounded into a double play to end the game
UP NEXT
- Catawba continues its seven-game start away from home to start the 2024 season next week, traveling to Columbus, Ga. for a three-game set at Columbus State
- The series starts on Friday; first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
