Barton survives Women’s Lacrosse’s comeback attempt

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's lacrosse team scored four straight goals to start the fourth quarter to turn a 9-6 deficit into a 10-9 lead, but ultimately fell to Barton College at Shuford Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 2-2 overall, while the Catawba Indians drop to 1-2 on the young season.

Ella McCusker led the way for Catawba with four goals and an assist, putting all seven of her shot attempts on goal. Charlie Skepple was the other multi-goal scorer for Catawba, adding a pair of goals. Joey Baillie had a goal and two assists. Sydney Quinn had three goals and an assist to lead Barton's offense.

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first three goals in the opening six and a half minutes. McCuakser got Catawba on the board at the 3:50 mark. Skepple scored to end the first quarter and Mary Sorvillo added a goal to start the second quarter to cut the deficit down to one. The two swapped scores as Baillie brought the Catawba Indians back within a score at the half, 5-4.

The third quarter remained tight, as the teams traded two goals apiece, before Barton scored back-to-back to extend their lead to 9-6 at the end of the third quarter. The floodgates then opened up for Catawba, who scored four consecutive goals, the first three came from McCusker alone to tie the game. Nearly three minutes later, Skepple's free-position shot gave Catawba a 10-9 lead. Barton responded with the contest's final three scores to walk away with the win.

The Catawba Indians return to Shuford Stadium on Sunday, hosting Alabama-Huntsville for a noon start.
