Men's Soccer Defeats Newberry 1-0; Picks Up First SAC Win of Season

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University men's soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Thursday (Mar. 4) with a 1-0 victory over the Newberry Wolves.

After a heartbreaking loss in overtime last week to Queens, and a draw in overtime with Mars Hill on Feb. 11, the Trojans came out with a sense of urgency tonight to pick up their first win of the young season. Harry Ward was able to find the back of the net in the 31st minute to give Anderson a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Early in the second half, the Wolves were able to get into the attacking third to create scoring opportunities. In the 53rd minute, Dan Stryffeler's shot hit the crossbar as the score remained 1-0. Goalkeeper Neko Crist came up with two clutch saves to help propel the Trojans to victory.

"It was a hard-fought win for the team tonight," said coach Michael Zion. "We needed the three points and we were able to accomplish that. On to the next game where hopefully we can keep this momentum moving forward."

The Trojans will be back in action on Thursday (Mar. 11) as they travel to take on the Limestone University Saints. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start, with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
