Tennis splits dual at Lenoir-Rhyne

Hickory, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's and women's tennis teams split their matchups at Lenoir-Rhyne on Thursday in South Atlantic Conference action. The 34th-ranked Catawba women defeated the Bears 4-2 to improve to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba men fell 4-3 to drop to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in league action.

The women took two of three doubles matches to earn the point. Sofia Hernandez and Carolina Correia defeated their opponent in #2 doubles 6-3 and Nika Dundovic and Tina Gomes clinched the point with a 6-3 win in #3 doubles.

Catawba took three of five completed singles matches on the day. Miya Ami took home a 6-4, 6-4 win in #2s, Alexandra Parra earned a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 win in #3s and Veronika Poliakova won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in #6 singles. Carolina Correia was leading 6-4, 1-6, 4-3 before the final match was canceled due to lightning in the area.

For the men, the team split three of six singles matches. Marcos Castares came from behind to win 2-6, 6-2, 10-8, Ryan Little earned a win in #3 singles 6-3, 6-0 and Sebastian Zabala won 8-6 in #5 singles.

The teams return to SAC play next Wednesday, traveling to Anderson.
