Women's Basketball Cruise Past Coker

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba stormed to an early lead and went on to post a 75-55 win over visiting Coker in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Cobras go to 3-6 and 0-4.

 

Lyrik Thorne paced the Lady Indians with 21 points, adding six assists and four rebounds. Mercedes Wampler added 13 points with Sara McInosh chipping in with 10. Mary Spry came off the bench to tally nine points.

 

After a slow start, Catawba would bolt to an 18-2 lead late in the opening quarter. By the half, the Lady Indians were up 37-16 and built a 35-point bulge near the end of the third quarter.

 

Both teams shot just over 40% with Catawba holding a 35-32 edge on the boards and committing eight less turnovers. Catawba racked up 34 points off the 29 Coker miscues.

 

Abigail Kessling had 15 points to lead the Cobras. Valicia Demeritte added a dozen points.

 

Catawba will close out its pre-holiday schedule on Monday at UNC Pembroke with a 1 p.m. tip.
