WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CONTROLS THE BOARDS AND STAYS UNBEATEN WITH WIN OVER LANDER

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba got 20 points and seven rebounds from Sara McIntosh and pulled away from Lander in the second half to post a 74-56 win on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians stay unbeaten at 4-0 on the year, while the Bearcats fall to 1-3.

 

Janiya Downs followed McIntosh with 17 points and nine boards with Mercedes Wampler tossing in 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Lyrik Thorne rounded out the double-digit scorers with 15 and dished out five assists.

 

The contest was tied at 30-all at the break and Lander held a 36-35 edge following a three-point play by Kayla Sanders with 7:42 remaining in the third quarter. Catawba surged at that point. Downs canned a three-pointer to start a 13-4 run that pushed Catawba to a 48-40 lead.

 

Catawba led 55-47 heading to the final quarter and built the lead to 14 just over two minutes into the final period after back-to-back baskets by Thorne. Catawba kept its double-digit bulge the rest of the way.

 

The Lady Indians shot 44% and held a 44-31 edge on the glass. Quadaija Langley led Lander with 15 points. Vashae Rideout added 10.

 

Catawba will host Virginia Union on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Goodman Gym.
