Barton takes midweek game at Baseball

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team allowed 15 runs between the third and fourth innings on Wednesday afternoon, as Barton College picked up an in-region win at Newman Park. The Bulldogs improve to 15-10 overall, while the Catawba Indians drop to 18-11 on the year.

The scoring came early and often for the Bulldogs, as Chase Waddell homered to right to give Barton a 2-0 lead after the first innings. Barton then added a 10-run third inning and a five-run fourth inning to lead 17-0 after four innings.

Drew Robertson and Ty Hubbard delivered back-to-back RBI base hits to get Catawba on the board in the sixth. Robertson later scored on a throwing error by the Bulldogs in the eighth and Dylan Driver hit a two-RBI double to score the game's final runs, down 19-6.

Jared Shapley earned the win for Barton, pitching five shutout innings in the start, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Casey Gouge took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings.

Catawba continues South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, kicking off a three-game set at Wingate. Game one Friday night is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
