Men's Soccer Comes Up Short Against Queens 2-1 in OT

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team came up short on Thursday (Feb. 25) in a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to the Queens University of Charlotte Royals.

Queens was able to find the back of the net late in the first half at the 38 minute mark, as Felipe Mendonca scored his first goal of the season. However, the Trojans responded midway through the second half as Alexander Cox-Ashwood picked up his first score of the season in the 66th minute with a beautiful shot from outside the box.

"We were able to create a lot of scoring opportunities tonight," said coach Michael Zion. "I was proud of the team's effort."

The match remained tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes of play. Both goalkeepers made several critical saves as Gal Elyashiv finished the night with seven saves for the Trojans. Just a few minutes into the first OT period, Mendonca scored his second goal of the night to clinch the victory for the Royals.

"It's always tough to lose in an overtime situation," said Zion. "We have to pick ourselves up and move on. We have to learn from this game and get ourselves ready for next week."

The Trojans will be back in action on Thursday (Mar. 4) as they play host to Newberry. The game is scheduled for 7:30 with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
