Eagles rally late to overcome Mars Hill

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (2-6, 0-3 SAC) was felled by Carson-Newman (8-2, 3-0 SAC) by a score of 82-70 Wednesday evening.
Mars Hill led 36-31 after the first 20 minutes of play. The Lions shot 50 percent from the floor and held Carson-Newman to 35 percent, forcing nine turnovers. A balanced scoring attack was led by Jackson Reid and Kory Davis, each scoring eight points for the Lions followed by six aside from Rajuan Conner, Kendall Davis, and Trey Belin.
With 13:06 left in the contest, Carson-Newman went on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to go up 57-48 just under nine minutes to play. Mars Hill clawed to to within five several times down the stretch, but was unable to complete the comeback.
The Eagles flipped their offensive switch in the second half, clicking at 66 percent from the floor and led by Bryant Thomas' 17 points. Ren Dyer and John Zhao added 13 apiece in the final 20 minutes of play.
Thomas led all players with 27 points and collected 11 rebounds for the double-double. Dyer added 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Kory Davis led the Lions with 16 points followed by 12 from Conner. Conner led the team with eight rebounds while Kendall Davis led the Lions with six assists.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, December 17 when they host Young Harris. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Meares Stadium.
