Marshall nets 26 versus Trojans at home

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-8, 1-8 SAC) was defeated by Anderson (8-5, 7-2 SAC) by a score of 86-70 Monday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
Tied at six with 2:55 played in the first, a three-pointer from Kaitlin Bailey was the catalyst for a Trojans' 5-0 run that was the last lead change of the contest. Samantha Michel led the Anderson offense with 11 points in the frame, making all five field goals attempted. Kyla Daniels led the Lions with four points followed by De'Ja Marshall's three points and five rebounds.
Anderson continued to put pressure on the Lions at the start of the second quarter, opening on a 6-0 run to push their lead to 11, 24-13. With 4:50 remaining in the half, a three-pointer from Gabby Gianikos narrowed the deficit to six, 26-20, however, Anderson responded. Xan Rowland hit two consecutive three-pointers, bookending a Marshall layup, to put Anderson up by 10 with 3:21 to play.
Anderson led 37-24 heading into the half. Rowland led the team with eight points followed by J'Mya Cutler's six. Marshall scored eight of the Lions' 11 second quarter points.
In an offensive shootout of the third quarter, the teams combined for 57 points with Mars Hill getting the 31-26 advantage. Marshall led all players with 11 while Gianikos added 10. Selby Baughman hit both of her field goal attempts, both three-pointers. Michel collected another eight points for the Trojans while Kaitlin Bailey chipped in with seven.
Anderson put the game away in the fourth, outscoring the Lions 23-15 with Britney Bailey scoring 10 and pulling down seven rebounds. Daniels led the Lions with six points in the final stanza as both Marshall and Gianikos each added four apiece.
Marshall led all players with 26 points and added 12 rebounds for the double-double. Gianikos netted 17 to go along with four assists and Daniels ended the contest with 10 points and three assists.
All Trojans figured in double-digits with Michel's 23 points and 13 rebounds leading the way. Bailey collected a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with her 12 points while Rowland ended the contest with 20 points.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, January 27 when they take on Lenoir-Rhyne on the road. Tipoff is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
