Women's Lacrosse Scores Game’s First Seven Goals En Route to 16-4 Win at Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C. -- The Catawba College women's lacrosse team scored the first seven goals on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 16-4 win at Lees-McRae College. The Catawba Indians improve to 1-1 overall, while the Bobcats drop to 0-2.

Charlize Skepple and Caroline Cox led the way offensively for Catawba, scoring four goals apiece in the first win of the season. Ella McCusker and Michaela Lantz each added three more goals while McCusker added an assist. Joey Baillie and Kylie Harris scored Catawba's other two goals.

Madison Shaffer and Mackenzie Mullan spearheaded the Catawba defense that forced the Bobcats to 31 turnovers and just four scores on the afternoon. Each had four caused turnovers, while Shaffer added a game-high seven draw controls.

It was all Catawba from the early going, as the visitors scored the game's first seven goals – five of which were scored by McCusker or Skepple. The Bobcats found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 7-1 at the halftime break.

The teams traded scores to start the second half, but Catawba regained their dominance, scoring another seven unanswered goals across the end of the third quarter into the fourth, as Cox personally scored three in a row in less than a three-minute span.

Catawba looks to continue their success at Shuford Stadium this Wednesday, hosting Barton for a 3 p.m. start.
