Women's Basketball Falls in OT on Last-Second Three-Pointer

AIKEN, S.C. -- Jentri Worley hit a three-pointer with three seconds left as USC Aiken knocked off Catawba 68-67 in overtime on Wednesday night at USC Aiken Convocation Center. The Pacers improve to 4-3, while Catawba suffers its first loss and falls to 7-1.

 

Worley had tied the game with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to go, but Catawba went back on top on a jumper by Lyrik Thorne with six seconds left. Worley followed with her winning shot and Thorne missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

 

Trailing for most of the game and much by double digits, Catawba made a fourth-quarter rally. Down 11 in the opening two minutes, the Catawba Indians went on a 7-0 run to get within four on a Thorne three-pointer. A basketball by Jada Porter had the Lady Indians within two with 4:38 left.

 

Catawba would eventually tie the game on a three-pointer by Mercedes Wampler with 25 seconds remaining at 55-all. Aiken would add a pair of free throws with nine seconds to go and Thorne forced overtime with a layout with four seconds left.

 

Catawba got 26 points, seven assists and five steals from Thorne. Porter and Sara McIntosh each had a dozen. McIntosh added nine rebounds.

 

Breanna Gustave led USCA with 18 points. Worley followed with 17 and Emily Trushel had 12. The Pacers held a 47-39 edge on the glass to help overcome 29 turnovers.

 

Catawba returns to action in a week, opening conference play at Coker on Dec. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
