Tennis caps Florida trip with sweep of PBA

West Palm Beach, Fla. —- The Catawba men's and women's tennis finished off their Florida Spring Break trip on Thursday with two wins, sweeping Palm Beach Atlantic on the road. Catawba's women improve to 6-1 on the season, while Catawba's men improve to 2-5 overall.

Catawba's men won the doubles point as Marcos Castares and Taketoshi Nanao won their doubles match 6-4 and Ryan Little and Tyler Juergens clinched the point with another 6-4 victory.

The Catawba Indians took four of six singles matches, while just needing a split for the overall team win. Castares took care of #1 singles 7-5, 6-1, Paul Dekester claimed the win in #4 singles 6-4, 6-3, Sebastian Zabala swept his way to a win in #5 singles 6-4, 6-3 and Nanao finished it off with a 6-3, 6-1 win in #6 singles.

The women won their second consecutive match to sweep the Florida trip, 4-3. Catawba took all three in the doubles, as Alexandra Parra and Vicky Beardsley took #1 doubles 6-4, Sofia Hernandez and Carolina Correia clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win and Nika Dundovic and Tina Gomes finished off a clean sweep with a 6-4 win.

Catawba earned the split in singles to earn the team victory, Parra claimed the #4 singles match 6-1, 6-0, Correia took #5 singles 6-1, 6-3 and Hernandez clinched the win with a 7-6, 6-4 win in #6 singles.

Both tennis teams return to action at home on Tuesday, hosting Barton for a non-conference contest.
