Women’s Volleyball takes a set off Wingate on the road Tuesday night

Wingate, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's volleyball team took a set off defending regional champion Wingate on the road Tuesday night, but eventually fell in four sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action.

 

TEAM STATS

- Wingate had 60 kills to Catawba's 39

- The Bulldogs hit .300 to the Catawba Indians' .134

- WU recorded 57 assists to CatU's 38

- Wingate held an edge in service aces 9-7

- The Bulldogs also enjoyed a slight lead in digs 72-67

- WU had nine blocks to Catawba's five

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kelcie Love had a team-high nine kills

- Jordan Danielson added eight kills while hitting .273

- Siena Roethler dished out 27 assists and had 10 digs

- Riley Hill led Catawba with 15 digs; Mailie Chretien added 13 digs

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET

- Back-to-back Wingate errors gave Catawba an early 6-3 lead

- Chloe Danielson's kill made it 8-6 Catawba

- Wingate rattled off six straight points to turn an 11-7 deficit into a 13-11 lead

- The Bulldogs led 18-13 after a Catawba attack error

- Catawba fought back to within 24-21, but a Gabby Saye kill clinched the first set for Wingate

 

SECOND SET

- Catawba opened up a small 5-3 lead after back-to-back kills from Chloe Danielson and Roethler

- A Lauren Patrick kill and WU error gave Catawba an 8-5 advantage

- Jordan Danielson's kill put Catawba up 13-10 at the midway point of the set

- Wingate took a lead after Lorna Stacherski's kill to give to take their first lead of the set since 3-2 at 22-21

- Back-to-back kills from Chloe Danielson and Love gave the lead right back to Catawba 23-22

- Catawba could not capitalize on its first set point, but a Wingate service error tied the match at 1 set apiece

 

THIRD SET

- The Bulldogs raced out to a 6-1 lead to force an early Catawba timeout in the third

- Catawba battled back with four straight points to cut the deficit to 6-5

- The sides were tied near the midway point 12-12

- Wingate scored 10 of 11 points to take a 22-13 lead

- Catawba scored three straight points following Rachel Gonzales' kill, but the Bulldogs closed out the set, 25-17

 

FOURTH SET

- Wingate once again led early on in the fourth set, leading 9-3

- Amber Rowoldt's kill gave the Bulldogs a 15-5 advantage

- Catawba whittled away to cut their deficit to 18-10, but the Bulldogs responded with four straight points to take a 22-10 lead

- Catawba fought off a pair of match points before eventually falling, 25-15

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba takes the rest of the week off from game action, returning to play at Goodman Arena next Tuesday, hosting Anderson at 7 p.m.
