Catawba Men's Lacrosse Falls to Belmont Abbey

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey claimed a 7-1 win over host Catawba in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Crusaders, ranked 20th in NCAA II, improve to 2-1. The Catawba Indians fall to 0-2. 

 

Matt Mitchell scored the lone goal for Catawba which came midway through the second quarter. At the time, it brought the Indians within 3-1, which was the score at the break. Belmont Abbey had went on top, scoring twice in the final 2:38 of the opening quarter. 

 

Belmont Abbey would add three more goals in the third quarter and a final tally at the 13:43 mark of the fourth. Davis McCulley led the Crusaders with three goals and an assist. Mikey Sweigart had a goal and two helpers. 

 

James Crighton made 15 saves in goal for Catawba. The Indians held a 47-39 edge in shots, but put just 16 on target. Thomas Sullivan had 15 saves for the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey dominated face-offs as Caleb Mulcahy won 10 of 11. 

 

Catawba travels to Baltimore, Md., next Sunday to face LeMoyne at 11 a.m.
