Pioneers falter on the road at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- The Tusculum University women's volleyball team was swept by Newberry College on Wednesday (Nov. 3) night, its first loss in over a month.

The Black and Orange (17-3, 13-2 SAC) dropped the match by scores of 16-25, 21-25, 23-25 to the Wolves (11-12, 5-10 SAC).

Newberry collected 21 kills via Natasha Bannister and 13 from Taylor Hall. The former also hit .341 on the night. Avery Webb accounted for 31 assists, while Amanda Berecz landed five service aces. Berecz also finished with a team-high 14 digs, followed by Webb's 12. Zoe Dinkins (one solo, two assists) and Liz Ober (three assists) are credited with three total blocks apiece.

Emiah Burrowes was the lone Pioneer to reach double-digit digs with 10. Raeley Matthews was just behind with nine. Peyton Gash and Bailey Parker notched six and five, respectively. Elise Carmichael (15), Catherine Clingan (13), and Carly Sosnowski (3) accounted for all of TU's assists. Matthews led the visitors with a pair of aces, while Carmichael extended her ace streak to 19-straight matches. Sosnowski scooped up a match-best 17 digs, ahead of Burrowes with nine. Burrowes and Lydia Collins teamed up on the only block of the match.

Newberry hit .261 as a team with 45 kills and 16 errors in 111 total attempts. Tusculum hit .196 with 34 kills, 14 errors, and 102 total attacks. The Wolves led the Pioneers in assists (41-31), digs (48-46), aces (8-3), and total blocks (6-1).

Tusculum continues its road swing with a 2 p.m. match at Anderson on Saturday, November 6.
