Softball celebrates Senior Day between split with UVA Wise

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team celebrated its three seniors on Saturday at Whitley Field, splitting a doubleheader with visiting UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference softball action.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 4, UVA Wise 2

TEAM STATISTICS

- UVA Wise out-hit Catawba 9-8

- The Catawba Indians recorded two of three extra-base hits

- Both teams committed an error in the contest

- Catawba had the lone stolen base in game one

- The Catawba Indian pitchers allowed two earned runs on nine hits and two walks, striking out four; UVA Wise's Jillian Jose allowed three earned runs on eight hits

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Bri Herring got the win in the circle, allowing one earned run in 2.2 innings; Riley Tucker also allowed just one earned run in 4.1 innings

- Courtnee Carter was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored

- Aniyah King went 2-for-2 with a run driven in

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Grace Flynn reached on a fielder's choice and stole second in the first

- Tucker's single moved her over before Kary Hales drove her in on a sac fly

 

SECOND INNING

- Three straight singles loaded the bases for the Catawba Indians with one out

- Herring drove in Carter on a sac fly to lead 2-0

 

THIRD INNING

- UVA Wise got a run back in the third on a wild pitch

 

SIXTH INNING

- The Cavaliers tied the game on a single to left field

- A hit-by-pitch got runners on first and second with one out

- Carter drove in the go-ahead run on a double

- King provided insurance on a sac fly to left, leading 4-2

 

GAME TWO | UVA Wise 6, Catawba 1

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit UVA Wise 8-7

- The Catawba Indians committed two of three errors in the contest

- Catawba also had two of three stolen bases in game two

- UVA Wise's Alivia Nolley allowed one run on eight hits, striking out one; Catawba's staff allowed four earned runs on seven hits and five walks, striking out five

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Herring threw 6.1 innings of relief, allowing two earned runs, striking out four

- Tucker went 2-for-4 with an RBI

- Carter also added multiple hits

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- The Cavaliers got the first two runners aboard in game two

- Hannah Bruce's two-out single scored an early run

 

THIRD INNING

- Flynn singled and stole second with one out in the third

- Tucker singled up the middle to score the tying run

 

FIFTH INNING

- Back-to-back errors allowed UVA Wise to score a run

- They scored another on a double play to take a 3-1 lead after fifth

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Wise added three runs in the seventh to help force the split

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba takes action at Whitley Field for the last time this season on Tuesday, hosting Limestone for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
