Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against No. 12/21 Carson-Newman

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker University women's basketball came up just short against No. 12/21 Carson-Newman on Monday afternoon (Feb. 15) by a score of 71-66.

The teams played to a 4-4 tie through two and a half minutes, before the Cobras would gain a lead and extend it to as many as seven with three minutes to play in the frame. The Cobras would take a 17-11 lead to the second quarter.

Coker would extend its lead into double digits a minute and a half into the second quarter, and the lead would fluctuate between single and double digits over the next few minutes. Carsn-Newman would trim the lead to five in the final minute of the quarter, as Coker took a 34-29 lead to the half.

The Eagles trimmed the lead to four two and a half minutes into the third, before the Cobras would re-gain a double-digit lead with four minutes to play in the frame. Carson-Newman rallied to take a 49-48 lead to the fourth quarter.

The teams played to a 51-51 deadlock two and a half minutes into the fourth before the Eagles would go on a run to take a 57-51 lead with under six minutes to play. The Cobras would rally to tie the game up at 61 with two minutes to play, before the teams would trade buckets into the final minute. The Eagles were able to capitalize on their chances, and take the victory in the final minute.

Ahlea Myers led the Cobras with 18 points off the bench, while Emily Davis scored 14 points and Hope Richardson also added 12 points. Six other Cobras scored in the game. Raya Coley paced the Cobras with eight rebounds on the day, while Davis and Valicia Demeritte each pulled down six rebounds. Six other Cobras were active on the glass in the game. Myers dished out a team-high five assists on the day, while six others helped on Coker buckets in the game. Coley and Ashauntee Nelson each registered two steals in the game, while three others each recorded one steal. Demeritte, Haley McClure and Richardson each posted two blocks in the game.

The Cobras return to action on Thursday (Feb. 18) to host Carson-Newman in a South Atlantic Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the DeLoach Center, with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
