Banks’ career-high double-double leads high-flying Men’s Basketball to comeback road win at Coker

Hartsville, S.C. —- The Catawba College men's basketball team utilized a key 27-8 run and a double-double and career-high from sophomore forward Justin Banks to overcome a double-digit deficit to earn a road win at Coker in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Catawba Indians remain undefeated in league play at 4-0 with the win and improve to 6-1 overall.

 

TEAM STATS

- Catawba shot 38-for-72 (53 percent) from the field, while Coker was 35-of-73 (48 percent) from the floor

- The Cobras knocked down 9 of 29 (31 percent) from three-point range, while the Catawba Indians were 0-for-14 (0 percent) from deep, their first game without a made three-pointer since February of 2014

- Catawba was 16-for-25 (64 percent) from the free throw line; CU was 10-of-13 (77 percent) from the charity stripe

- Catawba out-rebounded Coker 39-38, but the Cobras held the slight advantage in second-chance points 13-12

- Catawba has 13 assists to 14 turnovers; Coker had 17 assists to 22 turnovers

- The Catawba Indians held a 28-13 advantage in points off turnovers and a 66-48 edge in points in the paint

- Catawba's bench had a massive advantage in bench points, out-scoring Coker's 36-8

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Banks went for the career-high and double-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks on 10-of-12 shooting

- Javeon Jones added 17 points with five rebounds and three assists

- DeAngelo Epps pitched in 14 points and a team-high five assists

- Peyton Gerald recorded 11 points, six rebounds and three steals

- Kris Robinson was the fifth Catawba Indian in double figures with 10 points 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

- Coker sprinted out of the gates, leading 9-2 and forcing an early Catawba timeout

- A Tate Mulkey three-pointer had the Cobras up 12-2 at the 17-minute mark

- A Banks layup and an and-one from Kaleb Wallace cut Catawba's deficit to four less than three minutes later

- Coker answered with seven unanswered points to return their lead to double digits

- Back-to-back layups from Montraivis White cut the Catawba Indian disadvantage all the way down to three points at the 8:55 mark

- CU's Glenn Bynum converted an and-one to cap a 13-4 Coker run to take their largest lead of the game to that point at 12 points

- Catawba once again clawed back, using six straight points to cut the deficit in half with four minutes left in the half

- Another Banks dunk once again cut Catawba's deficit to three, but a late Cobra layup made it a 51-46 Coker lead after an up-and-down opening 20 minutes

 

SECOND HALF

- Catawba scored the first five points out of the gate in the second half to tie the game at 51

- The Catawba Indians took their first lead of the game at the 17:19 mark of the second half on Banks' layup, forcing an early Coker timeout

- Catawba would go on to score the next eight points, too, taking a 65-55 lead, which capped a 27-8 run between the first and second halves

- Coker responded with an 11-0 run to retake the lead, keeping Catawba scoreless for nearly five minutes

- The Cobra lead climbed to as much as seven points at the 8-minute mark on Marvin Brumfield's three-pointer

- The Catawba Indians continued to chip away, scoring the next four points to get the deficit within a possession

- Gerald's dunk gave Catawba the lead briefly before Coker responded with a basket; Banks' dunk put Catawba up for good at the 4:48 mark

- Banks' dunk kickstarted a 7-0 run for the Catawba Indians, who led 87-81 with three minutes to go

- As Catawba continued to keep the Cobras at bay with free throws, Coker cut their deficit to a single point with eight seconds left

- Robinson stepped up at the line with two big free throws with three seconds to go and Coker's try for a tie was no good
