Men’s Lacrosse comeback falls just short vs Coker

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to a single goal, but Coker held on for the 10-9 win at Shuford Stadium in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action. The Cobras improve to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians drop to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Jackson Braswell led Catawba with three goals, while Frank Cetrone was Catawba's other multi-goal scorer with two. Kyle Chessock piled up a game-high 11 ground balls and Javondre Paige, Jordan Dash and Trent Bellotte each recorded two caused turnovers. Justin Beighey led the Cobras with four goals scored.

The teams traded a goal apiece in the opening seven minutes, as Cal Gibson answered Braswell's game-opening goal. Catawba's Jack Butler scored his first goal of the season at the 7:14 mark to take the lead. After Gibson responded with another goal to tie the game at 2, Braswell and Cetrone scored back-to-back to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Garrett Simi made it three straight Catawba goals in the opening two minutes, as the home team took a 5-2 lead at the 13:38 mark of the second period. The Cobras scored the final three goals of the second period, each of the three goals scored in the third period and the first two goals of the fourth period, a 7-0 run over 36 minutes of game action to take a 10-5 lead with just over nine minutes remaining.

Catawba started its comeback at the 7:11 mark, when Bakari Neely scored a man-up goal to break the scoreless drought. Cetrone, Dash and Braswell followed suit with goals in the next four minutes to cut the deficit to a single goal. The Cobras kept Catawba out of the back of the net including a pair of key stops in the final two minutes to earn the road conference win.

The Catawba Indians hit the road this weekend, traveling to Tusculum for a 1 p.m. start.
