Women's Lacrosse falls to Lenoir-Rhyne in season finale

Salisbury, N.C. – The Catawba College Women's Lacrosse team (3-13, 2-8 SAC) closed the regular season at Shuford Stadium on Tuesday night, falling in a 17-10 matchup against the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (5-10, 4-6) as a late rally came up short

 

TEAM STATS

- Lenoir-Rhyne totaled more shots, 28-23, while Catawba attempted more position shots by a 9-2 margin

- Catawba had the advantage on draw controls, 17-14

- Turnovers were nearly even, as Lenoir-Rhyne gave possession away 22 times, as Catawba ceded the ball 23 times

- Ground balls were also fairly even, with the Bears retrieving 22 of them and Catawba recovering 20

- In goal for Catawba, Evie Kaserud (3-13) took the loss as she made six saves while Lenoir-Rhyne's Sally Friesen (5-10) earned the win with eight saves

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

 - Abby Shuren led Catawba with four goals, followed by Mary Sorvillo with three of her own. Helena Cronemiller (2) and Charlize Skepple (1) rounded out the scoresheet for Catawba

- Ella McCusker recorded Catawba's lone assist of the night

- Shuren's seven shots were a Catawba-high, with Sorvillo tallying four and both Skepple and Sarah Maier attempting three

- Each of Kaserud, Rebecca Salber, Jenna Hirvonen, and Maier recovered three ground balls

- Sorvillo, Maier, and Audrey Adelsberger caused two turnovers apiece

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- Sorvillo struck first, putting Catawba on the board at 13:08 as she converted a free position shot

- Chloe Christensen answered for Lenoir-Rhyne at 11:15, before Shuren notched her first goal with 9:24 on the board to put Catawba back ahead 2-1

- Lenoir-Rhyne took the lead through goals from Rylie McGhan at 7:36 and Anneleise Meyer at 4:10

- Sorvillo's second of the opening quarter, coming with 1:18 before the intermission, tied the game at 3-3

 

SECOND QUARTER

- Christensen and Sorvillo opened the second quarter with goals just :33 seconds apart at 14:14 and 13:41

- Three straight goals for the Bears beginning at 12:22 saw the visitors take a 7-4 lead at 8:18

- Catawba answered through Skepple, who cut into the lead with a goal at 6:41. While Christensen completed her hat-trick for Lenoir-Rhyne six minutes more the half, Cronemiller's first goal of the night kept Catawba within two goals at the half, 8-6

 

THIRD QUARTER

- Lenoir-Rhyne threatened to pull coming out of the half, rattling off a 5-0 run from 12:53 to 2:43 led by a pair of goals from Kirra Olson

- Shuren scored Catawba's first goal of the half with :48 seconds to go before the final intermission

 

FOURTH QUARTER

- Shuren's goal in the third turned into a personal 3-0 streak, as she struck again at 14:17 ad 10:16 to pull Catawba to within four goals, 13-9

- A three-goal run from Lenoir-Rhyne, spearheaded by a pair of goals in two minutes from Alexa Burghardt, put the Bears up 16-9 with 5:20 to go

- Cronemiller added her second goal at the 3:41 mark

 

NOTES

- Shuren's effort was the third time this season that she had notched at least four goals, and her second over the last three games. She finishes the season as the only Catawba player to break the 30-point mark, with 32

- With two goals in each of her last three games, Cronemiller would finish the season with 23 points, the second-most points behind Shuren

- Sorvillo's hat-trick, her third of the season, made her the second Catawba player after Shuren to reach 20 goals on the year
