Pioneers battle to 2-2 draw with King

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- Tusculum and King played to a 2-2 draw in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Parks Field.

The Pioneers (1-4-3) outshot the Tornado (2-5-1) by a 29-13 margin, but Luis Calderon scored twice for King to erase leads of 1-0 and 2-1 by Tusculum, which received goals from Oscar Rubio Jimenez in the 32nd minute and Ayuk Tambe in the 62nd minute.

The Pioneers had the first shot of the match in the 13th minute, as an attempt from Jimenez was stopped by Tornado keeper Jake Davis. King's first shot attempt came from Carlos Saavedra in the 19th minute, but went wide of the frame. Tusculum's Andreas Kvam nearly put home the first goal of the match nearly a minute later, but his header went off the post.

Meanwhile, Tusculum piled up the corner kicks in the first half, with shots coming from Loic Desrameaux in the 27th minute and Jimenez in the 29th minute that were stopped by Davis. The Pioneers finally broke through at 31:05 as Jimenez put a free kick past Davis for his team-high fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Tusculum lead.

King began to apply pressure immediately after Jimenez' goal, putting shots on Tusculum keeper Ivan Safranic in the 33rd and 41st minutes. A flurry of shots from the Tornado resulted in two saves from Safranic, but the third try from Luis Calderon on a rebound of a Charles Johnson shot gave King the 1-1 tie with just 19 seconds left in the half.

Both teams finished with eight shots in the first half, with four saves from Safranic for Tusculum and three by Davis for King. The Pioneers had nine corner kicks in the opening half to one by the Tornado.

In the second half, Tusculum took the first six shots at the King goal and finally converted with 28:19 to go as Tambe dribbled down the right side, cut to the middle and beat Davis low for his second goal of the season.

Nearly six minutes later, Calderon took a pass from Saavedra and fired a shot off the crossbar and into the net for his second goal of the afternoon and a 2-2 tie with 22:32 remaining. The best scoring chance for either team in the rest of regulation came from Tusculum's Jonny Winter, who grazed the post with a shot with 5:41 left.

Each team had one shot on goal in the first overtime period, with Safranic making a stop on Ben Harris with 4:19 to play and Davis denying Pau Peiro from long range with 22 seconds on the clock.

Tusculum had three outstanding scoring chances in the second overtime, but came up empty. Davis was able to turn away a header from Kvam that was directed to the upper left corner with 6:51 to go, then the defense cleared a try from Tambe with 5:11 remaining. Jimenez had the final chance for the Pioneers with 3:56 left, but Davis made the stop.

In addition to its advantage in shots, the Pioneers had a 13-1 edge in corner kicks over the Tornado in the match. Both teams were whistled for 13 fouls and shown one yellow card, while Tusculum was offsides six times to zero for King.

Safranic made six saves in goal for the Pioneers, while Davis made three of his eight saves in overtime. Tusculum outshot King 10-2 in the overtime and 21-5 over the final 65 minutes of action.

The Pioneers will return to South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a trip to Newberry to face the Wolves.
