#18 Newberry tops Men’s Lacrosse Saturday

Newberry, S.C. —- The Catawba College men's lacrosse team out-scored 18th-ranked Newberry in the fourth quarter, but the Wolves held on for the win at Setzler Field Saturday in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action. Newberry improves to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians drop to 2-9 on the season and 2-5 in conference play.

Frank Cetrone was the leader offensively for Catawba, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Nick DiBitetto won 14 of 22 face-offs and recorded six ground balls, while Kyle Chessock forced two turnovers. Scott Reed led the Wolves in points with two ground balls and two assists.

Newberry scored each of the three goals in the first period before scoring again to start the second to take a 4-0 lead at the 14:40 mark of the second quarter. Cetrone got Catawba on the board less than two minutes later, but the Wolves answered with three more goals to take a 7-1 lead with less than five minutes to go in the half. Garrett Simi added a late goal, as Catawba trailed 7-2 at the halftime break.

The Wolves added three more unanswered goals to start the second half, leading 10-2 at the 10-minute mark. Caleb Richardson found the back of the net for Catawba and DiBitetto took a face-off and scored himself with just over a minute to go in the period, as the Wolves led 11-4 with 15 minutes remaining.

Newberry scored the opening goal of the fourth, but Keegan Maxwell, Jordan Dash and Cetrone scored back-to-back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 12-7 with six minutes to go. The Wolves' Lucas Ferreira answered with a goal less than minute later and Newberry held Catawba scoreless the rest of the way.

Catawba returns to Shuford Stadium for two games next week, starting with #15 Limestone on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
