Trojans Roll Past Staten Island in Shutout

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Behind a 16-hit attack, the Anderson baseball team piled up 11 runs as the Trojans notched their first shutout of the season by blanking Staten Island, 11-0, Saturday night on Crosley Field at the Cal Ripken Experience.

Anderson improved to 12-1 on the season, while Staten Island was playing its season-opening contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kye Andress was 4-for-5 on the night, with a triple and three singles and also reached base on a fifth-inning walk. The Hendersonville, N.C., native also scored three runs and posted two RBI. Brayden Owens was also 4-for-5, with four singles and a run scored. Justin Fox added a triple and a pair of singles, while driving in two runs and crossing the plate twice. Nick Vella notched a two-run double as part of a three-RBI night, with Carlos Hernandez driving in two runs. James Hanvey added a single and a pair of walks in the win.

PITCHERS
Joseph Cottone improved to 3-0 on the season by tossing seven full innings. The left-hander struck out six, while walking three and limiting the Dolphins to three singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans scored a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings and broke the game open by batting around and adding three runs in the top of the fifth frame.

AU sent eight batters to the plate in the seventh inning, while posting an additional four runs to round out the scoring.

ANDERSON STAT OF THE NIGHT
The 42 at-bats was a season-high for the Trojans.

NOTABLES
• The Dolphins used 23 players in their season-opener, including nine as pitchers.
Kye Andress extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Carlos Hernandez is riding a six-game hitting streak entering Sunday's doubleheader.
• The seven innings pitched marked a season-high for Cottone.
