Women's Volleyball caps 2-0 week with sweep over Coker

Salisbury, N.C. - The Catawba College women's volleyball team steamrolled the Coker Cobras at home in Goodman Arena on Saturday afternoon, showing out in a 3-0 victory to improve to 5-6 on the year and 3-4 in SAC play.

TEAM STATS

- Catawba racked up nearly twice as many kills as the visiting Cobras, notching 40 of them at a .243 clip to Coker's 22 at .029

- A pair of key differences were in hitting errors and receiving errors, with Coker leading both margins at 19-14 and 7-1, respectively as Catawba servers put up seven service aces

- 34 of Catawba's 40 kills were assisted, with Coker at 19 of 22

- Catawba also led the way defensively in digs at 54 to 45 and had a decisive edge around the net, with six block assists and a solo effort for 4.0 total blocks to Coker's 0.0

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Mailie Chretien led Catawba in kills once again with 10, and was the only player to hit double-digits in that category as she led all players. Chloe Danielson and Katrina Misra each had six kills of their own to tie for second on the team

- Siena Roethler led all players in assists, serving up 27 of them. The next closest player for Catawba was Riley Hill, who had four

- Kary Hales and Avery Fleshood tied for the lead in digs for Catawba, with 10 apiece. Hill and Roethler were close, with nine each as well

- Lauren Bodell had Catawba's lone solo block, while Lauren Patrick got up for a pair of block assists. Jordan Danielson, Chloe Danielson, Roethler, and Chretien were also credited with assisting blocks

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET

- Catawba never trailed in an absolutely dominant first set, with Patrick setting the tone from the start with an opening kill. After keeping it close early at 2-3, that would be the closest Coker would get

- Chloe Danielson had three early kills and Devyn Berg served up back-to-back service aces, as Catawba raced out to a 10-3 lead and forced a Coker timeout following a 7-1 run

- But momentum was all Catawba, with Patrick notching another pair of kills and a block assist while a series of errors short-circuited any chance of a Coker comeback. Another Catawba run, this time 8-2, forced another Cobras timeout with the score at 18-5

- Just like the first timeout, it was to no avail; Catawba ripped off a 6-0 run after play resumed to put Coker on the brink, 24-5, before wrapping up the first set 25-6. Chretien had a pair of kills during the closing run, along with a Hales service ace and a block that Patrick and Jordan Danielson combined for

SECOND SET

- Coker would strike first in set two, before a Chretien kill and a series of errors got Catawba rolling on a 5-0 run

- The lead would stretch to 11-4 as Chretien, Misra, and Chloe Danielson all recorded kills

- Coker drew to within five points at 7-12, before Catawba shifted into another gear with an 8-1 to make it 20-8. Misra notched a pair of kills, while Katie Clark and Sofia Beard also got in on the action to force another timeout by the Cobras

- Coming of the timeout, a 3-0 Coker run threatened to potentially flip momentum; but Beard had other plans, scoring back-to-back kills to start a 3-0 Catawba answer and make it 23-11

- Caitlyn Cindrich delivered Catawba to match point, before Beard capped off her huge second set showing with her fourth kill for Catawba's decisive 25th point, as took the set 25-15

THIRD SET

- Coker refused to go away, however, and the third set proved to be an exciting back-and-forth affair between the two sides. Three early kills put the Cobras up 4-2 as Jordan Danielson kept Catawba close with a pair of kills, before kills from Chretien, Chloe Danielson and Berg helped make it 7-4 Catawba

- Coker responded well, ripping off a 10-2 run and threatening to pull away at 14-9 thanks to a streak of six kills and then a series of Catawba errors

- While Catawba bent, they didn't break, instead answering with eight unanswered points of their own

- A trio of kills from Chretien led the charge, while Patrick added a pair and Misra and Jordan Danielson chipped in as well

- While Coker would be able to pull within one, at 17-18, they wouldn't lead again in the match. A 7-2 Catawba run would end the third set, 25-19, and had Catawba the win with a 3-0 sweep.
