Tennis splits matchup with nationally ranked LR teams

Salisbury, N.C. – The No. 45 ranked Catawba College Men's and Women's Tennis teams were in action at the Johnson Tennis Center on Friday, taking on a pair of nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne squads in a conference battle. The Catawba men continued their scorching run in SAC action, improving to 8-1 in the conference with a huge 4-3 victory over the No. 32 ranked Bears, while the Catawba women dropped a tough 3-4 affair to the No. 30 ranked Lenoir-Rhyne women

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

No. 46 Catawba Men (10-6, 9-1 SAC) 4, No. 32 Lenoir-Rhyne Men (10-4, 7-3) 3 

- For the third straight time, Catawba's men opened the matchup by securing the Doubles point and an early lead. Both the No. 1 duo of Ryan Little and Edoardo Cecere and the No. 3 tandem of Tyler Juergens and Paul Dekestercruised to 6-1 victories, their respective sixth straight 

- Catawba's No. 2 pair of Mateo Berne and Marcos Castares would be edged out in a 6-4 matchup against Zachary Cox and Mattias Selde 

- Cecere's Singles win streak reached nine, as he downed Nevio Dux in a pair of 6-3 sets on Court No. 1  

- Berne would put Catawba up 3-0 with a dominant showing on Court No. 2, as he knocked off Cox in a pair of 6-0 sets for his fourth straight individual victory 

- Juergens would be defeated from the No. 3 position by Vadym Rogynski, who gave the Bears their first point with a two set win 

- Alessandro Valletta was edged out by Rufus Plane on Court No. 4, 6-2 and 6-3 

- Castares clinched the match for Catawba on the No. 5 Court, taking down Joel Hemmings in a 6-4 opening set and a 6-3 second frame to make it 4-2 with his fifth straight win  

- Little was defeated on the No. 6 Court by Raphael Champaud, 8-4 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

No. 46 Catawba Women (11-6, 6-4 SAC) 3, No. 30 Lenoir-Rhyne Women (13-3, 8-2) 4 

- Lenoir-Rhyne took the Doubles point, with both Catawba's No. 1 pairing of Nika Dundovic and Veronika Poliakova and No. 2 pairing of Rin Igarashi and Sofia Hernandez Mera being defeated in 6-2 sets 

- Catawba's No. 3 pairing of Ami Miya and Anna Wiseearned a 6-2 win, downing Dawson Clifford and Alexa Allison  

- Wise battled hard against Runa Muderrisoglu on the No. 1 court, in a back-and-forth match that went to three sets. Muderrisoglu took the first set 7-5, only for Wise to bounce back with a 6-2 victory and force a third frame. Both players gave it everything in the final set, with Mudderrisoglu pulling out a 7-6 win and the Bears' second point  

- Miya earned Catawba's first point from the No. position, toppling Claudia Orsini in a pair of 6-3 sets 

- Isidora Zivkovic would be defeated by Alicia Wahlberg on Court No. 3, 6-3 and 6-2 

- Vaishnavi Ventakesh fell to Nellie Wahlberg on Court No. 4 in a pair of 6-4 sets as Lenoir-Rhyne became the first team to four points  

- Hernandez Mera earned her sixth straight Singles win with a win over Allison in the No. 5 position, 6-4 and 6-3 

- Igarashi also emerged victorious on Court No. 6, as she earned the win over Jessica Fuchs with a 6-3 opening set and 6-4 second set

- Both Catawba tennis teams are back in action on Friday, April 12th as they welcome the Anderson Trojans to the Johnson Tennis Center for Senior Day at 2:00 p.m.
